What is identity in Christ?
What even is Identity?
- Identity is how you define yourself
- values
- e.g. what things important to you and worth spending time on
- beliefs
- e.g. what things are good or bad
- personality (we talk about this later)
- how you see yourself in the eyes of others
- job, achievements, relationships, etc.
- values
Identity in Christ
Identity in Christ means that your core identity is based on who you are in Jesus, not on external things (worldly things. again like you job etc.)
John 1:12 NLT
”But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”
Philippians 3:20 NLT
”But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
”This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
Instead of defining yourself by what you do or what others say about you, you define yourself by what God says about you.
Identify vs Personality
Question: Ok. But what’s the difference between identify vs personality?
- Identity is who you are at the core (values, beliefs, what gives you worth etc.)
- Personality is how you express yourself
We all should have a Identity in Christ, but we way we express is different.
How they work together:
Your identity in Christ is the foundation. It tells you that you are a child of God, loved and created with purpose.
Your personality is the unique way God designed you to live out that identity.
- Peter passionate and after finding his identity in Christ, God used that personality to preach and lead the early church.
- Paul was a deep thinker. After finding his identity in Christ, God used that personality to write letters.
THEY COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER
Non Christian Identity Wheel
defines their identity based on things they choose or what the world tells them
- Career – “I am what I achieve.”
- Relationships – “I am valuable because of who loves me.”
- Success & Wealth – “My worth depends on what I have.”
- Appearance – “I am defined by how I look.”
- Talents & Skills – “I matter because of what I can do.”
- Culture & Background – “I am who my society and upbringing say I am.”
The Christian Identity Wheel
Christ is in the center, instead of one’s self
- Child of God (John 1:12) – “My worth is not in what I do, but n who God says I am.”
- Loved Unconditionally (Romans 8:38-39) – “Nothing can separate me from God’s love.”
- Forgiven & Redeemed (Ephesians 1:7) – “My failures don’t define me.”
- Citizen of Heaven (Philippians 3:20) – “My future is secure beyond this world.”
- New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) – “I am transformed by Christ, not bound by my past.”
- Purpose in Christ (Ephesians 2:10) – “I was created for good works that God has prepared.”
The Danger of a Misplaced Identity. How is this different from a worldly identity
- It Leads to Insecurity – If we define ourselves by success, relationships, or approval, we will always feel like we’re not enough.
- It Makes Us Dependent on Things That Can Change – A job, status, or reputation can be lost in an instant, leaving us feeling lost.
- It Can Lead to Sinful Choices – If we try to prove ourselves in the wrong way, we may compromise our faith to fit in or succeed.
Question: What is an Identity Crisis?
People that have an identity Crisis…
- lose something that once defined them (a job, a relationship, status, or success).
- realize that what they built their identity on isn’t satisfying.
- feel pressure to be someone they’re not.
Living Out Your Identity in Christ
Recognize, Align and Reinforce
- Recognize the Values of a Christian Identity
- Align Your Actions with Your Identity
- Don’t forget and reinforce Your Identity
Transformation Example
Old Identity (Before Christ) | New Identity (In Christ) |
---|---|
Defines worth by achievements | Defines worth by God’s love (Ephesians 2:8-9) |
Seeks validation from people | Finds security in Christ (Galatians 1:10) |
Acts based on emotions | Acts based on God’s truth (Romans 12:2) |
Fears failure | Knows God’s plan is greater (Jeremiah 29:11) |
By following this flow Recognize → Align → Reinforce, your mindset and actions will shift naturally to reflect your identity in Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT
(8) God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. (9) Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Galatians 1:10 NLT
Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.
