1 The Fall and the Call (Gen 1-12)
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” - 12:1-3
- After the much corruption, God start anew with Abram.
- God chooses one family for the sake of all the families of the earth.
- Israel will be the means, vehicle, to bring the blessing to all nations.
2 Israel’s Call and the Broken Covenant
This is the plan.
What happened instead?
“But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, so you, Israel, have been unfaithful to me,” declares the Lord. - Jeremiah 3:20
“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.” - Ezekiel 36:26-27
3 Jesus Becomes Israel and Fulfills the Covenant
- Israel is God’s firstborn son; Jesus is God’s Son.
- Israel goes down into Egypt; Jesus goes down into Egypt.
- Israel spends forty years failing in the wilderness; Jesus spends forty days there, is tested.
- Israel consists of twelve tribes; Jesus appoints twelve disciples, symbolically reconstituting Israel around Himself.
“26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female,for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. - Galatians 3:26-29
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. - Romans 10:17
- Even though they expected a messiah, a very different messiah, they rejected him.
